A clear cost, decided together
The question of cost should never stand in the way of defending yourself. Here, in full transparency, is how fees are calculated — and how legal aid can cover all or part of the costs.
How fees are set
The method of calculation is agreed with you from the outset, in writing. Depending on your case, it may take several forms:
The consultation
A meeting to take stock of your situation and understand your rights and your options. Its rate is communicated to you before the appointment.
The hourly rate
Fees are calculated on the time actually spent on your case, at a rate agreed in advance.
The advance payment
An advance on fees and costs may be requested as the case progresses; it is deducted from the final statement, which is always itemised.
In addition to fees, there are costs (opening the file, copies, travel) and, where applicable, court costs. Everything is set out in a transparent statement.
Fees
Legal aid (pro deo)
If your income does not exceed certain thresholds, you may be entitled to second-line legal aid: the cost of a lawyer's involvement is then covered, in whole or in part, by the State. Some situations qualify for it automatically.
A pro deo lawyer is not a ‘free’ or lesser lawyer: they are a lawyer like any other, registered to provide legal aid. You receive the same commitment and the same standard — only who pays the fees changes.
Those who may be entitled include:
- People whose income is below the legal thresholds
- Recipients of the integration income (CPAS) or of GRAPA
- Certain specific situations provided for by law
Eligibility is checked on the basis of a few supporting documents (income, household composition, etc.). From the first contact, the office honestly tells you whether you are likely to qualify, indicates which documents are useful and guides you through the process with the Legal Aid Office (BAJ).

Is the first appointment chargeable?
The consultation is a service provided by the lawyer; its rate is communicated to you in advance, in full transparency, when you book the appointment. So you know exactly what to expect.
How much will my case cost?
It depends on the area of law and the complexity. That is precisely the purpose of the first appointment: once your situation has been understood, you are offered a clear estimate and a written method of calculation.
What is pro deo?
It is the common name for second-line legal aid: if your income is below the legal thresholds, the State covers all or part of the lawyer's fees. The practice checks your eligibility and supports you with the application.
In which languages can I be seen?
